When you build your own shed, you should give serious consideration to the process of choosing a shed roof. The roof of the shed is perhaps more important than the windows and doors because you want to ensure that it is weather proofed and won't leak every time it rains. If you live in an area that gets a lot of snow in winter, the choice of roof for your shed is very important. You do need to choose a material that can withstand the weight of the snow. Instead of using 2 X 4 roof trusses, you will need 2 X 6 roof trusses. You also have to look at the pitch or steepness of the roof. The steeper the roof, the less water will hold up on it and thus cause leaks.

If you are shingling the roof, you have to look at the rating on the shingles. Some shingles have a ten - year rating while others have a thirty or thirty-five year rating. The rating also affects the price of the shingles with the higher ratings being more expensive. You shouldn't sacrifice quality for saving money because it will pay off in the long term. The more expensive shingles mean that you will have a carefree roof for a longer period, while with the cheaper ones you may have to repair the roof after only a few years.

Another aspect to consider when deciding on a roof for your shed is the amount of room you want to have inside. You can have a barn roof that will give you a second story for storage or even as a place where you can have a room of your own. A single A-frame roof is the most commonly used shed roof, but you don't have the extra storage space.
