A barn style storage shed is called a garden shed. A shed, which is typically simple, single-story structured and in the back garden is the garden shed. It is a slight structure built for shelter or storage. It is used as a workshop and can be attached as a ‘lean-to’ for a permanent building or separate. It is often with open front or sides. Sheds can be of various types depending on the complexity of their construction and their size. They vary from small open-sided tin-roofed structures to large wood-framed sheds with shingled roofs. Windows and electrical outlets can be attached to them. They are available in it ‘do-it-yourself’ kits or as ready products, which are assembled by professionals.
Garden sheds can be made of wood or metal. It can be for domestic or commercial purposes. The simplest and least expensive sheds are available in kit form. These are the small sheds. The shed kits and “do-it-yourself” plans are available for wooden sheds. These are used to store tools and equipment for gardening supplies. You can also store products that are not suitable for indoor storage, such as gasoline and pesticides. The various metal gardens are shed made of galvanized steel for homes with small gardens or modest storage needs. They come in varieties of 5ft tall x 3ft wide x ft or 3ft tall x 5ft wide x 4ft deep. For better storage shelves and hooks are often used to maximize the storage space.
A garden shed is needed to
• Store the lawn mower or tractor.
• For storing pesticides you cannot keep indoors.
• Tools used for gardening.
• As a workshop when you don’t want to mess your garden.
• They can also be used as summer houses, if you allow plenty of sunshine in it.
Wood is affordable and easy to cut, move and erect. So think about your shed base. In climates where the ground freezes, freezing of soil can cause the water in the soil to expand. You can opt for frost-protected foundations that extend below the level that frost penetrates or round concrete pads that support treated-lumber posts. For small sheds, a four 16-inch diameter holes for the entire foundation can be enough. The wooden-floor should be treated with lumber that will resist wood rot and protect from wood-destroying insects. Use lumber treated plywood plates to prevent water from spoiling the wood.
Buy prefabricated roof trusses for the roof structure, as it is the better and easier alternative. Build windows as this will allow plenty of sunshine. You can use the shed as a summer house and also for storing plants. Make sure your storage is big enough to store all your requirements. Don’t let price be the deciding factor over quality. Check if you need a permit to build the shed or not. Buy or build a pressure-treated ramp for easy access to your outdoor storage shed. For a solid-wood ramp real rubber mats can be used to make pathways for yourself and the lawn-tractor tires.
