Making Window Boxes
Making window boxes is not a difficult project to take on. What you have to do first is decide the size of box you need to fit the window or the railing of the patio where you plan to place it. Try to use a piece of wood that is the same depth as the box you want to make because this will eliminate trying to fit pieces together for the bottom of the box.
Choose the type of wood you want to use and purchase enough of it at one time to complete a full box. For example, a typical window box measures about 2 1/2 to 3 feet in length. This means you will have to buy a piece of board either 1 x 6 or 1 x 8 that is 10 feet long. When cutting the wood, cut two pieces the same length for the front and back, 2 shorter pieces for the sides in the desired width and 1 piece for the bottom. The bottom piece should also be two inches wider than the two pieces you cut for the sides.
Predrill two holes on each end of the front and back pieces you cut for the window box. You need to predill two holes in the bottom piece on the sides and an extra hole to allow for water to drain through. Glue the sides to the front and back pieces. Then glue the bottom piece in place and screw it to the front, back and sides to make it secure. Then you can sand the wood and paint or stain it whatever color you desire.
This simple chore is one that is very easy to make into a home-based business. You don't need a large workspace to complete the job and you can display them on your lawn or patio to let people know they are for sale. Flea markets are also a great way to sell the window boxes you make.
