Outdoor Window Boxes

One of the easiest ways to add a splash of color just outside your window is to install outdoor window boxes. This is especially true if you don't have a lot of space for flowerbeds in your yard. Window boxes a re small containers that either sit on the window ledge or hang from a hook and are filled with flowers. Most people put the boxes away during the winter months, but you can have them there all year long if you build them into the window design.

There are many different sizes and shapes of these boxes that are perfect for any of your outdoor areas. They don't need to be attached to windows either, even though that is the name of them. You can easily have one of these boxes resting on your patio or even hanging from the railing. They come in long narrow designs, designs that look like baskets and some with intricate curves and designs on them.

Window boxes designed for the outdoors come in a wide variety of materials as well. You can easily make one from wood and paint or stain it any color you wish. They are readily available at nurseries, garden centers and home improvement stores in spring and summer and are not very expensive. Some of the other materials you can use instead of wood include bronze, copper, vinyl, composite and wrought iron. You can coordinate the color and material of the boxes with your patio furniture or with the color of the exterior of your home.

On advantage of using these containers for your flowers is that you c an easily move them from one place to another if you don't have them permanently attached. You can also change the flowers to suit the blooming periods and have a combination of annuals and perennials. However, like any garden, the plants do need to be weeded, watered and nourished in order to look colorful and healthy.
